Hueco Tanks is known around the world for rock art as well as climbing. Hidden in Hueco's numerous rock shelters and coves are more than 2000 seperate painted marks including over 200 spectacular painted masks. Unlike other rock art sites in the Southwest, these images are not in the open; visitors are unlikely to find many of them on their own. Hueco Rock Ranch now offers commercially guided tours to rock art sites tailored to the interests and abilities of the group.
It is hard to look upon Hueco's pictographs and not wonder about who painted them and why. Rock art guides describe what is known about the images and the cultures who painted them. Plan on 2-4 hours of lively discussion, hiking, and fun.
The fee for private rock art tours is $20 per person with a base rate of $60 whether for one, two, or three clients. A maximum of 25 clients is allowed on a rock art tour.
Printmaker Deborah Cool-Flowers, whose studio and residence are next to Hueco Rock Ranch, re-creates rock art images as etchings on handmade paper. Her work is on display at Hueco Tanks State Historic Site, Texas Parks & Wildlife and New Mexico State Capitol Building. A certified rock art guide at Hueco Tanks since 1999, Deborah has been invited to show her Rock Art on Paper Collection (www.rockartonpaper.com) and to speak on rock art at the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology in Albuquerque, the El Paso Museum of Archeology and the Anasazi State Park and Museum in Boulder, Utah. Along with the perspective into her presentation, explaining why some authorities claim that rock art is not art at all - and refuting that claim.
